Well since I lack a second pair of mics at the moment I lobbied my bud Taperjeff to loan me the TOA KY's.  He actually has 2 pairs of these.  Anyway here are some pics of these ultra-rare mics.  I might also add these are compatible with the JKLabs DVC box.

In the box...

Mics by themselves....

On a tbar.  Pretty much have to run them inverted.  You can imagine the strangeness of running them right side up.  They sky about 8" above the bar.

Shown with the stock windscreen.  Beefy sucker fer sure.

Closer look...

Mic by itself...terminates in a TA4F

Power module/mount...the TA4 from the mic plugs in to this and them you come out with some regular XLR's into your pre.

So my thinking is to get some TA4F>TA4M cables so I can run the modules in a pelican away from the caps.
Not sure if it would work but I would think it should? So I can run them as shown.
(Note:  by using one clip they are able to mount to the Neumann bars I designed a while back.)

So what are all ya'lls thoughts on the extension cables.  Do I have to figure out anything special regarding type of wire, how it's wired etc?
Can't wait to start rolling these badboys again.

Yeah!!!

Here's to Mark & his "mods"

You should've seen those before he cleaned them up!
They had duct tape gunk all over them & they were NOT PRETTY!!!

Kudos to Mark! The TOA's live again!!!

Here's a sample of what the TOA's bring.

This was one of if not the last time these were ran.

I've never heard these KY's, but I am sorta suprised that these are being hyped. TOA is one of the biggest companies in the world making commercaial audio products (if not THE biggest). They make lots of mixer/amps that are great for 70v distributed audio, but in my experience (and I am one of the bigger TOA dealers on the east coast) their mics are less than stellar. The KY's are a legacy product...maybe back in the day they were making some decent mics. I wonder why they were discontinued?

Listen to the sample.   Grin  There's also many Phish and Panic sources out there to hear as well. These are sweet and do a great job in the section environment.  Not really hyping them though  just thought they were unusual.  Not something you see everyday.  And regardless of the company or their quality these are solid mics that's for sure.   Wink

speaking of fat heads...i finally picked one up. i LOVE it on git-fiddles, and the other day I tried it on a snare drum, about 12" off the head. it sounds damn good!

as for TOA....i know for a fact that their wireless systems are manufactured by a 3rd party...i kinda wonder if the KY's were made by a bigger mic company (ie. Shure/AT) and branded by TOA. i'll ask my TOA rep next time i see him.

That's very possible.  Shure seems to use that TA4 cable a lot in their stuff.

Did you happen to tape WSP 4/1/97-Ventura, CA with the TOAs??  I used to have a DAT with TOA K1>DA-P1 as the source that sounded good(DAT was probably mis labeled and should be TOA KY, not K1).  Would love to get that again if it were perhaps from your TOAs.

One of my all time favorite PH tapes:

PHISH
03-31-93
Roseland Theater, Portland, OR

TOA k1's Balcony > DTR-80P > CDR > SHN (Cool Edit 2000 on 3 tracks)
Provided by Josh Cohen - josh@shakedown.techlib.org
Fixed and seeded by Carl Johnson - carl_ivar@yahoo.com

I listen to that source on a regular basis... sounds sooo sweet! +T for stellar mics! Cool

I'd bet he did but I'll let him answer.  FWIW the K1's were the full bodied version of the KY's.  No huge mounts just a regular mic ala 460, etc.  But Jeff never really ran the K1's I don't think.  Ian (ArchivalAudio on here) ran them.
